Cohesion policy: review of the balance of competences

The government is carrying out a review of the balance of competences between the UK and the EU. The review will provide an analysis of what the EU does and how it affects the UK. The Review of the balance of competencies detailed guide provides full details of the review programme.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) is leading on the report on cohesion policy in the 3rd semester of the review. The cohesion review will concentrate on EU activity that supports economic development. It will consider the EU’s regional policy, mainly funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the Cohesion Fund and the European Social Fund. It will examine:
- EU funds infrastructure projects through TransEuropean Networks and Connecting Europe Facility
- competence in industrial policy under Article 173 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union
