Simplifying the process for revising tolls at local tolled crossings

We are seeking views on proposals to amend the legislation governing the method by which local statutory toll operators can vary their tolls. This only applies to those crossings that are currently required to amend their tolls using the procedures set out in the Transport Charges &c. (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1954.

Current proposals include:

• enabling operators to increase their tolls, not more than once annually, up to a specified level without an application to the Secretary of State for Transport - there are options around what the specified level could be (eg inflation, inflation minus 1%) and what the process should be for operators wishing to increase tolls above the specified level
• enabling operators to increase tolls by any amount, as and when required without an application to the Secretary of State for Transport

This consultation is aimed at operators and users of statutory tolled crossings and was announced by Robert Goodwill on 27 February 2014.
