Stop and search powers: Code of Practice for authorisation and exercise under the Terrorism Act 2000
Terrorism Act stop and search powers are changing under the Protection of Freedoms Bill, with views invited on the draft Code of Practice.
The Northern Ireland Office invites your views on the draft Code of Practice for the use of stop and search counter terrorism powers in Northern Ireland.
A review of counter terrorism and security powers, ordered by the Home Secretary, concluded in January 2011. It recommended that stop and search powers under sections 44-47 of the Terrorism Act be replaced with more limited power, preventing police from carrying out stops and searches without reasonable suspicion. The changes will be introduced through the Protection of Freedoms Bill, which will replace the stop and search powers.
Before the changes can take effect, the bill needs a Code of Practice to be put in place.
