Local government pension scheme: technical amendments to benefits
We are consulting on amendments to the local government pension scheme which are necessary to respond to recent legal judgements and meet existing policy objectives.
The local government pension scheme is a statutory scheme established under the Public Sector Pensions Act 2013. Its rules and benefits are set out in regulations. Recently there have been a number of legal challenges to those regulations on grounds that they are not consistent with the human rights of those affected by them.
The purpose of this consultation is to propose some changes to the scheme to accommodate judgements already made and to give some flexibility to respond to potential future developments. We are also taking this opportunity to make a technical amendment to an earlier Scheme which is required to ensure that it functions as intended and in line with existing government policy.
