Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE): implementing the recast Directive and UK system changes
Seeks views on revised WEEE Regulations, and changes to the UK system for WEEE collection, treatment recovery, recycling and re-use.
This consultation looks at:
- how the government should amend the existing Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2006 to ensure compliance with the recast WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU published on 24 July 2012
- how to respond to concerns from UK producers of electrical and electronic equipment under the Environmental Theme of the Red Tape Challenge about the cost of meeting their financial obligations under the UK WEEE Regulations
The consultation is an important part of the process of introducing the revised WEEE Regulations that are expected to come into force from 1 January 2014.

- waste management companies and treatment operators
- re-use organisations
We aim to publish a government response within 8 weeks of the consultation closing date (21 June 2013).
We will take views of all stakeholders into account. If there is support for reform of the UK WEEE system under the options set out in the consultation document, we will consult further on draft regulations.
We intend to lay the final version of the Regulations before Parliament to come into force from 1 January 2014, when the old Regulations will be revoked. We aim to publish the UK government guidance notes for the new Regulations at least 10 weeks before that date.
