Food Information Regulations (FIR) 2013
Seeking views on plans to make domestic laws so that EU regulations (1169/2011) on food information to consumers can be enforced in the UK.
We want to know what you think about our plans to make domestic laws which enable the food information to consumers (FIC) (Regulation (EU) No, 1169/2011) to be enforced in the UK.
The aims of FIC are to improve the information provided to consumers so that they are able to make informed choices about the food they buy, and to update legislation to reflect current industry practice and consumers’ changing information needs.
In bringing in legislation in support of FIC, existing regulations will be revoked. Most of the impacts of this is discussed in the Impact Assessment (IA) however there are additional questions related to
- Alcohol claims and
- Ice cream, and cheese and cream
These are discussed further in Annexes 1 and 2 of the consultation document.
An Impact Assessment which includes specific consultation questions on the various impacts of the legislation has been prepared by Defra working with the Department of Health, Food Standards Agency and equivalent organisations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Update - 13 December 2012In the Impact Assessment included in the consultation pack, we asked for stakeholders’ views on the appropriateness or otherwise of the proposed approach to enforcement, that being based for the most part on improvement notices, or where an immediate risk to public health is involved, criminal sanctions.
Defra is seeking consultees’ views on some additional questions, looking in a little more detail at how the improvement notice approach will work, and specifically at the appeals process to be put in place as part of this approach.
