Appropriate measures for the biological treatment of waste
We want your comments on our proposed technical guidance for appropriate measures for permitted facilities that biologically treat waste.
Last fetched 03 May 2026 · gov.uk
Detail
This guidance will apply to:
- aerobic and anaerobic treatment of biodeagradable organic wastes, for example by composting, anaerobic digestion and mechanical and biological treatment
- treating sewage sludge using any of the given biological processes
- storing recovered material (compost and digestate)
- aerated lagoons and activated sludge (as a waste-water treatment)
It will replace several guidance notes (see section 1 of consultation document) and include the framework for the assessment of novel waste.
The guidance aims to:
- improve the design and operation of permitted facilities in the biological treatment of waste sector
- make sure that appropriate measures are applied consistently, where relevant
It will also incorporate the relevant requirements of the waste treatment BAT Conclusions publication made under the European Industrial Emission Directive (2010/75/EU). This applies to waste installation facilities permitted under the Directive.
