Briefing
When a person is awarded compensation as a result of an accident, injury or disease, the
amount of compensation they receive may be reduced to take account of social security
benefits already paid to them. The current rules on ‘compensation recovery’ were
introduced in 1997, but such provisions are a longstanding feature of the social security
system.
