Briefing
Rail Fares since privatisation have been regulated by Government to limit the size of increases on key tickets, while allowing market forces to determine other fares. Historically, average increases have been slightly in excess of inflation, but in recent years, a trend of limiting the rises to inflation has been maintained.
Bus Fares are not regulated at a national level, but may be influenced by local authorities. Many local bus services receive subsidies to ensure that uncommercial services can continue to operate as a public service.
