Progress on UK free trade agreement negotiations
This short briefing summarises the UK's progress in negotiating new free trade agreements.
This page provides details of the UK’s trade agreements since Brexit. It includes only “new” agreements, not those rolled-over when the UK left the EU. It includes trade agreements in force, those where agreement has been reached and those still being negotiated. The links in each section provide more detail on the substance of the agreements/negotiations.
AustraliaThe UK and Australia signed a free trade agreement in 2021 and it has been in force since 2023. This was the first UK trade agreement negotiated from scratch after Brexit.
CanadaNegotiations for an updated UK-Canada agreement were launched in March 2022. Negotiations were suspended in January 2024, however, following disagreements over agricultural market access.
In June 2025, the UK and Canadian Governments agreed to establish a new UK-Canada Economic and Trade Working Group to, amongst other things, deepen their trading relationship and address existing market access barriers. The working group will report back to both Prime Ministers within six months.
CPTPPThe Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership is a trade agreement between 12 countries, most of which are in the Asia-Pacific region. The UK, which joined in 2024, is the first European country in CPTPP. The other members are Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.
EUTrade relations between Great Britain and the EU are currently governed by the Trade and Cooperation Agreement. Northern Ireland’s trade falls under the Windsor Framework.
In May 2025, the UK and EU held a summit meeting where they agreed to strengthen co-operation in a number of areas, including alignment on agri-food standards. The Library briefing on the summit contains more information.
GreenlandIn October 2025, the government announced the resumption of trade negotiations with Greenland. The negotiations, which originally started in 2022, aim to eliminate tariffs on UK imports of seafood and also strengthen co-operation on critical minerals.
Gulf Co-operation CouncilThe Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) represents six countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Negotiations for a UK-GCC trade agreement started in June 2022. On 20 May 2026, the government announced that agreement had been reached.
IndiaThe UK and India signed a free trade agreement in July 2025. It is not yet in force. The agreement was laid before Parliament in Janaury 2026 and will be debated in the House of Commons on 9 February. Legislation will be needed to implement its provisions.
IsraelNegotiations for an updated UK-Israel FTA were launched in July 2022. The UK Government suspended these negotiations in May 2025 in protest at the Israeli Government’s actions in Gaza.
MexicoNegotiations for an updated FTA with Mexico started in May 2022 but have been discontinued.
New ZealandThe UK and New Zealand signed a free trade agreement in February 2022. The agreement has been in force since May 2023.
SingaporeThe UK and Singapore signed a digital trade agreement in February 2022. It came into force in June 2022.
South KoreaNegotiations for an updated trade agreement with South Korea started in November 2023. In December 2025, the government announced that it had reached an updated agreement. The UK already has a trade agreement with South Korea carried over from EU membership. Parts of that earlier agreement were due to expire in early 2026.
SwitzerlandNegotiations for an updated trade agreement with Switzerland started in May 2023 and are ongoing.
TurkeyNegotiations for an updated trade agreement with Turkey started in March 2024 and are ongoing.
UkraineThe UK’s Digital Trade Agreement with Ukraine came into force on 1 September 2024.
United StatesIn May 2025, the UK and US Governments agreed the general terms of trade agreement (the “Economic Prosperity Deal”). This non-binding agreement seeks to lessen the impact of US tariffs on the UK. The agreement has been partially implemented.
In 2020, the UK and US held negotiations for a trade agreement but these were inconclusive.
