Local area data: Electric vehicles and charging points

This interactive dashboard allows you to explore data from the Department for Transport (DfT) on electric and low-emission vehicles and charging points in each local authority. It includes plug-in vehicles, such as electric vehicles, and other low-emission vehicles. It can be used to view specific types of vehicles, such as cars or buses and coaches.

There have been several local authority mergers in recent years, with new local authorities created in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023. This page shows data for local authorities that existed in April 2023.

The charging figures represent devices reported as operational at midnight at the start of each calendar quarter, the figures in this dashboard are for the start of October 2025.

Vehicles data refers to both private and company vehicles registered in the local authority at the end of October 2025.

Vehicles are allocated to a local authority according to the postcode of the registered keeper. For privately owned vehicles this is the keeper’s address and for company owned vehicles it is the company’s registered address. The address does not necessarily reflect where the vehicle is located. This is especially true for large fleets kept by companies involved with vehicle management, leasing or rentals. Significant changes in the number of vehicles from year to year can often occur when these companies change their registered address.

The exact geographical location of a vehicle registration cannot always be allocated due to the postcode being incomplete or invalid.

We aim to update aspects of this dashboard in line with data releases from the Department for Transport, but the data shown here may not be the latest available. MPs and their staff can contact the Commons Library with queries about updates.
