D-Day 80: Commemorations for the 80th anniversary
The 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings – also known as D-Day – were on 6 June 2024.
A series of major commemorations is planned in the first week of June to mark this historic occasion, with events planned in the UK and at various locations along the Normandy coast.
This briefing outlines the plans for the official D-Day commemorations.
UK commemorationsThe UK’s National Commemorative Event will be held in Portsmouth, while the UK’s main commemorative event in France will take place at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer, overlooking Gold Beach.
It is the first time, during a major commemorative year, that this event will take place at the memorial following its official opening in 2021.
Other commemoration eventsEvents will also take place at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Bayeux War Cemetery in Normandy, the final resting place of 4,144 members of British and Commonwealth service personnel who died during the Normandy Landings.
