Background
We believe that many online harms are already illegal under criminal, advertising, consumer protection, and data protection laws. We also think that the profiling and recommendation systems amplifying harmful content could also be regulated under UK GDPR. We feel that under ECHR Articles 8 and 10, restrictions affecting privacy and expression should only be used where less intrusive alternatives are insufficient. We are concerned that it has not been clearly shown why stronger enforcement of existing laws is insufficient first.
