Ban the publication of a criminal’s religion, nationality or immigration status
We believe publishing a criminal’s religion, nationality, or immigration status unfairly associates entire communities with the actions of one individual, and can fuel prejudice, division, and violence.

Background
We feel reporting should focus on an offender's actions and the facts, not characteristics shared by innocent people.
We call on the Government to ban public authorities, politicians and media outlets from publishing and highlighting a suspect or criminal’s religion, nationality, ethnicity, or immigration status unless it is directly relevant to the crime or public safety. Unnecessary disclosure could encourage collective blame, inflame tensions, and expose innocent people to hostility or violence. We believe public communication should focus on the individual and promote accountability without fuelling division in society.
