Background
The UK wastes around 9.5 million tonnes of food each year, while millions of people face food insecurity. Much of this food is still edible. Food waste also creates about 18 million tonnes of greenhouse gases annually, with rotting food producing methane in landfill. Requiring supermarkets to donate surplus food would reduce waste, help charities and support families in need.
