Street works permit schemes: changes to regulations
Seeks views on proposed changes to the street works permit scheme regulations, which are planned to take effect from April 2015.
The Department for Transport is seeking feedback on proposed changes to the 2007 street works permit scheme regulations.
The Traffic Management Act 2004 (TMA) allows local highways authorities in England and Wales to establish street works permit schemes. These schemes enable local authorities to specify that those wanting to undertake work on an authority’s road must obtain a permit. As part of the Deregulation Bill, there is a plan to remove the requirement for the Secretary of State for Transport to approve schemes in England. In future they will be approved by a council’s own order. Schemes in Wales will still approved by the appropriate national authority. Regulations are being amended to take account of changes and to include updates on the way permit schemes come into effect.
Responses to this consultation are welcomed from anyone, but those most likely to benefit from responding include:
- local authorities
- utility companies
- the sector representative bodies
as well as those representing the full range of road users.
