Motor insurance alternatives: removal of deposit and security options
Amending road traffic legislation to remove the options of making a £500,000 deposit or obtaining a security instead of motor insurance.

Seeking views on our proposal to remove the 2 existing alternatives to conventional motor insurance of:
- deposits
- securities
The alternatives, which would be amended accordingly, are:
- 144 (1) and 146 of the Road Traffic Act 1988
- Article 90(2)(b) and Article 93 of the Road Traffic Order 1981
Removing the options would require all persons using a vehicle on a road or public place to have compulsory third party motor insurance.
