A proposal to increase firearms licensing fees administered by the police

This consultation asks whether the firearms licensing fees administered by the police should be increased.

Last fetched 03 May 2026 · gov.uk
Detail

This consultation seeks views on whether firearms licensing fees administered by the police should be increased. The Home Office also welcomes comments on how the review process should be managed.

Police forces in England, Wales and Scotland administer the licence requirements for firearms and shotguns (section 1 and 2 weapons as defined by the Firearms Act 1968). There are 11 types of licence administered by the police for which the fee can be set and section 43 enables the Secretary of State to amend the fees by Order.

The Home Office has worked with partners to develop these proposals. It aims to enable police forces to achieve full cost recovery for the issuing of firearms and shotgun certificates when an eCommerce system (an online system currently under development) is operational.
