Revocation of the 2 GHz Mobile Satellite Services Regulations

This consultation is seeking views on the proposed revocation of SI 2010/672 "The Authorisation of Frequency Use for the Provision of Mobile Satellite Services (European Union) Regulations 2010”.

Last fetched 03 May 2026 · gov.uk
Detail

In 2010, the UK implemented SI 2010/672 to authorise 2 Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) operators to use frequencies within the 2 GHz band for MSS operations, aligning with EU-wide decisions at the time. These licences expire on 13 May 2027.

As we approach 13 May 2027, the UK’s legal and regulatory framework needs to remain fit for purpose. The current legislation includes offence provisions that could restrict future use of the band once the licences expire. Therefore, we are consulting on plans to revoke SI 2010/672. This revocation will ensure the UK’s legal framework remains fit for purpose and enable Ofcom to authorise future use of the 2 GHz band under domestic law.
