We're consulting on the transfer of police and crime commissioner functions to the Mayor of South Yorkshire at the May 2024 elections.
Last fetched 03 May 2026 · gov.uk
Detail
This consultation focuses on the transfer of police and crime commissioner functions to the Mayor of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. It is aimed at people who live or work in South Yorkshire.
As part of this transfer, we would bring forward the next scheduled mayoral election in South Yorkshire from May 2026 to 2 May 2024.
If a transfer took place, the mayor’s police and crime commissioner functions would include:
- issuing a police and crime plan for South Yorkshire
- setting the police budget
- appointing (and if necessary, suspending or dismissing) the chief constable
- addressing complaints about policing services
- providing and commissioning services for victims and vulnerable people
- working in partnership to ensure that the local criminal justice system is efficient and effective
