Revised PACE code A

Consultation on proposed changes to PACE code A, which concerns police powers to stop and search suspects.

Last fetched 03 May 2026 · gov.uk
Detail

This consultation runs until Monday 20 October 2014.

The draft code has a covering note and detailed table outlining the changes and their purpose with links to the paragraphs concerned.

The changes in this draft have been made in order to implement the government’s commitment as set out in the consultation on stop and search, which is to:

revise the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) Code of Practice A to make clear what constitutes ‘reasonable grounds for suspicion’ – the legal basis upon which police officers carry out the vast majority of stops. The revised code will also emphasise that where officers are not using their powers properly they will be subject to formal performance or disciplinary proceedings
