Overseas Territories Consultation

Consultation on the future of the Overseas Territories.

Last fetched 03 May 2026 · gov.uk
Detail

The Foreign Secretary made an announcement to Parliament on 14 September 2011 setting out the UK Government’s strategy towards the Overseas Territories. This focused on three policy goals:

  1. to strengthen the engagement and interaction between the UK and the Territories

  2. to work with Territories to strengthen good governance arrangements, public financial management and economic planning where this is necessary; and

  3. to improve the quality and range of support available to the Territories.

The Government is keen to gather views on how best to realise these goals in each Territory and invites, in particular, responses to six key questions.

  1. Challenges: Economic development, Everyday life, Politics & government

  2. Cooperation with the UK

  3. Governance, financial management and economic planning

  4. External support

  5. Cooperation between Territories

  6. Global profile of the Territories

There are many people and groups who have an interest in the future of the Overseas Territories and can provide us with insight into how to develop the UK’s relationship with them. We look forward to receiving ideas.
