Detail

This draft strategy fulfils the first part of the Government’s commitment to produce a UK-wide strategy for the management of solid low level radioactive waste. It is primarily aimed at non-nuclear industry radioactive waste managers; the environmental regulators; waste planning bodies. It will also be relevant to operators of all waste disposal facilities.

The non-nuclear industry means those organisations producing radioactive waste but which are not part of the nuclear industry. It includes hospitals, the pharmaceutical sector, research and education establishments, all of which depend on the use of radioactive materials to conduct their business. The non-nuclear industry also includes those businesses that produce radioactive waste as a by-product of processing material containing natural radioactivity (principally, the oil and gas industries).
