Submarine Dismantling Project: site for the interim storage of Intermediate Level radioactive Waste
MOD is seeking views on proposals for storing radioactive waste from the Royal Navy’s nuclear powered submarines after they have left active service.
The Submarine Dismantling Project is to deliver a safe and secure solution for dismantling 27 defuelled submarines. This involves recycling the bulk of the submarine and disposing of the remainder. The disposal process includes storing certain waste, known as Intermediate Level radioactive Waste (ILW), for an interim period until it can be transferred to a Geological Disposal Facility some time after 2040.
The public consultation will run from November until February 2015. During this time public exhibitions will be held at each of the shortlisted sites. The selection process is at an early stage and the feedback will help us choose a site from the shortlist.
