Skytyping and skywriting legalisation
Proposal to legalise skytyping and skywriting as additional forms of aerial advertising activities in the UK.
Last fetched 03 May 2026 · gov.uk
Detail
We propose legalising the aerial activities of:
- skytyping, which is performed by a formation of 5 aircraft, that delivers a line of text in the sky visible from the ground
- skywriting, which is the formation of letters and symbols from the smoke trail of a single aircraft manoeuvring in the sky and visible from the ground
Skytypying and skywriting would be added to the list of existing aerial displays, such as balloon inscriptions or banner towing behind an aeroplane, currently allowed in the UK..
The proposal, if agreed, would require amendments to the ‘Civil Aviation (aerial advertising) regulations 1995’.
